Today there was standing room only on the right side of History!!
As per the media release put out today by Attorney General, George Brandis,
“The right to marry in Australia will no longer be determined by sex or gender. Marriage will now be defined in the Marriage Act 1961 as the ‘union of two people to the exclusion of all others, voluntarily entered into for life’. Same-sex couples now have the same rights under the Marriage Act as all other couples.
These historic reforms will commence on Saturday 9 December 2017.
As from Saturday, same-sex couples will be able to lodge a Notice of Intended Marriage to commence the one month minimum notice period required before the solemnisation of marriages under the Marriage Act.”
How frakking awesome is this news?! Such a long time coming, but that it’s finally here is something we should all be celebrating!
I’ve had a couple of teary phone calls with friends today, as they are finally going to be seen by our country with the rights under the law they should have already had. Such high emotions our skin was tingling & we absolutely cried tears of joy.
Once the Governor General signs on the dotted line & gives Royal Assent, every same-sex marriage that was entered into overseas will be legally recognised here, & same-sex couples will be able to lodge their Notice of Intention to Marry forms!!
You already know I’m a wedding photographer, & that I rather love weddings.
One of my best friends (who is Gay) was the ring bearer at our own wedding last month. Along with the words, “We hold hope that we will soon see an end to the gender-based restrictions placed on legal marriage. The option to enter into Marriage, & all the legal protections it offers, should be available to all who classify as a couple by Australian law, irrespective of their gender,” that we asked our Celebrant to speak during our ceremony, my husbeast & I both voted Yes during the Plebiscite.
We also helped several friends keep their heads above water during the mental health turmoil they were suffering throughout that time, & both of us were very vocal about what the question asked actually was & why it had nothing to do with religion.
But I don’t feel that I’ve done enough.
For the last several years, I’ve offered discounts & services in this business that same-sex couples weren’t able to take me up on. So right now, where it matters most, I’m rectifying that.
The first two same-sex weddings that book with me will be discounted 50% off the normal price.
The next three same-sex weddings that book with me after that, will be discounted 25% off the normal price.
So the fine print:
- These will be seen as order of booking, not order of wedding dates.
- A “Booking” is a signed & confirmed wedding photography contract, with a paid deposit.
- Your wedding must be taking place in Australia, by a person authorised by law to conduct marriages according to Australian law.
- Bookings 1 & 2 receive 50% off, bookings 3, 4, & 5 receive 25% off.
- If you’re wanting to get married outside the Perth metro, or outside Western Australia, please get in contact with me. I’m not at all averse to travelling & we may be able to sort something out that is still budget friendly.
And on that note, I’m off to celebrate a lot more about this momentous news out of Parliament! I have bubble mix & party poppers & am not afraid to be completely judged by our dog.
