Yesterday, Duchess Silk (Facebook, Model Mayhem) & I had booked in a tea drinking day to compensate for my injury caused stir craziness. While I’m finally beginning to be less slow moving due to my back – it’s healing up well, hurrah!! – I’m currently undergoing treatment for my left knee because my kneecap is sitting in the wrong place. It’s as though my warranty has expired! The idea had been to drink copious amounts of tea, plot photoshoots for my Geeks & Gamers project, & watch Doctor Who until our eyes bleed.
The Duchess brought over a stunning lace & organza dress & a Caesar-esque headband to show me to work out their potential for a makeup design she’d seen in my book a few weeks back. Maybe it was the tea, but we ended up deciding to just go ahead & do it.
Soon enough, my dining room table was covered in makeup pots & palettes – browns, golds, greens & oranges. I’d received new colours since my original sketch for this makeup, & I was interested to see if some substitution would improve on it. Mostly I was interested in testing them.
We started out with no ideas for posing. Or props. Or backdrops. Or lighting. All we had was a sketch, coloured in pencil, of a makeup idea.
We were entirely winging the rest.
Grabbing out a length of organza (from inside a trunk that doubles as a prop) that I thought might have potential, I uncovered some silk flowers… &, armed with a Venetian styled mask, we just played about & let ourselves discover where we could go.
It was awesome.
It’s really brilliant having a photography studio in my home. It opens up so very many last minute possibilities & means we have all the time in the world to spend on them. And having friends who don’t mind being in front of my lens makes that infinitely more fantastic!
